Bienvenidos á Buena Idea (Sp. Welcome to Good Idea), an entrepreneurial education initiative for children and teachers in developing countries. Buena Idea engages with youth and local educators to grow collaborative practices, entrepreneurship, and most importantly self-efficacy. Our goal is to provide participants with whole person development and positive habits that will support them in actualizing their economic independence. We work with individuals in marginalized communities and help them build their self-esteem, grow new ideas, identify with business sector, and ultimately to expand their understanding of possibilities.

Buena Idea is ‘lots’ more than just a good idea! It is a community entrepreneurial education program that works with vulnerable populations. Buena Idea was piloted in March 2014 in a small town on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic named El Factor. In the Dominican Republic, Buena Idea teaches children 6-12 years old how to be entrepreneurs in their first language.

Who We Are

Buena Idea was launched and is supported by Future Leaders Today, the not-for-profit arm of Futures Today Consulting. Future Leaders engages with local communities, partners and collaborators to form learning and socially responsible communities focused on poverty eradication and economic justice, particularly for women and children. Our goal is to increase opportunities for economic justice for women and children throughout the developing world. We created a curriculum that matches children’s innate desire and zest with artistic creativity and local economic conditions.

It’s not only about developing good habits, or discussing what is a paradigm. We also train participants how to assess and increase their personal development, benefits of being proactive, goal setting, prioritizing, creating win-win situations, understanding and seeking to understand, as well as the concept of synergy, and believe it or not balancing your life.

Core Concept

The core concept is that by helping children they FEEL and become whole and valued in their communities. We will increase the likelihood of them starting their own business. We work in areas where there are limited growth areas for children. There are economic, institutional and social structures and systems that make it difficult for women and children to see themselves as wage earners. At Future Leaders we believe that we are planting a seed for tomorrow’s economic growth.

If we can help 25% of our participants start their own business or at least to begin to think about how to start their own business we will have made a positive improvement in the vitality of the local economy while sustaining individual self-development and increasing local knowledge base and competencies.

As of March 2014 we’ve been working with 45 active youth participants throughout the nine-week program. These children did not only participate in their lessons they have become ambassadors and are now teaching entrepreneurship to their parents. Lets not forget, we also trained the teachers. The teachers now also see themselves as being liberated from ways of being and perspectives that previously served to suppress their dreams of self-reliance and/or entrepreneurship.
