Many of us are thinking about setting goals for the upcoming year. I find it interesting that we do this in North America at a time when the days are shortest. December is really the darkest month. It is host to the Winter Equinox the shortest day of the year. For many it is also a time of giving grace, sharing and reflection. Whether you’re closing the books on business or enjoying the spiritual nature of the season, it is a good time to pause and reflect. Reflect on what you have, and how did you get it?

When did you feel your personal best this past year? What were you doing at the time?

That’s your sweet spot. That’s the experience you want to recreate. When setting goals this year pick something that is going to make you happy. Not just the end result, the process should make you happy too. For example, what’s the point of making it a goal to go to the gym 5 days a week if you hate the gym. Go out and be happy. Make other people happy and it’s a 2-fer. You know double the fun. Life is too short to be miserable.

Goal setting is more about our willingness to go after the goal than it is about the goal itself. When you make being happy part of the goal setting process, even if you don’t reach your goal you’ll still have enjoyed yourself.
